Lucas Ledwaba is an award-winning journalist, photographer, and the author of A Desire to Return to the Ruins(BlackBird Books, 2022) and Broke and Broken – The Shameful Legacy of Gold Mining in South Africa (BlackBird Books/Jacana, 2016).He is also the co-author of We Are Going to Kill Each Other Today – The Marikana Story (Tafelberg, 2013), which was adapted into a successful stage production, Marikana – The Musical, by the South African State Theatre in 2014. The production went on to win at the Naledi Theatre Awards. Ledwaba has published essays and works of fiction in various collections, including Culture and the Liberation Struggle in South Africa: From Colonialism to Post-Apartheid (2021), Voices from the Land (Protea, 2007), Black Tax: Burden or Ubuntu (Jonathan Ball, 2019), Joburg Noir (Jacana, 2019), Hauntings (Jacana, 2021), and Botsotso – Contemporary South African Culture (2007). He also co-directed the documentary film Troupes of War – Diturupa (2016), which tells the tragic history of African men who served during World War I.
